What Is Sheet Metal Processing? What Are the Material Selections?

Sheet metal processing is a key skill that sheet metal technicians need to master, and it is also an important process in the forming of sheet metal products. Sheet metal processing includes traditional methods such as cutting and blanking, punching, bending and forming, as well as various cold stamping die structures and process parameters, various equipment operation principles and manipulation methods, and new stamping technology and new processes. The processing of metal sheet parts is called sheet metal processing.

Sheet metal processing is a vital skill that sheet metal technicians must master, and it serves as a crucial step in the production of proto mould sheet metal products. This encompasses traditional techniques such as cutting, punching, bending, and forming, while also encompassing knowledge of various cold stamping die structures, process parameters, equipment operation principles, manipulation methods, as well as new stamping technology and processes. The comprehensive expertise required in sheet metal processing is essential in achieving high-quality proto mould metal sheet parts.

Metal sheet processing is called sheet metal processing. It mainly involves the production of products such as chimneys, barrels, oil tanks, funnels, ventilation ducts, bends of various sizes, circular and square shapes, and cone shapes. The main processes include shearing, bending, flanging, bending and welding, and riveting, requiring certain knowledge of geometry.

Sheet metal processing, also known as metal prototyping, encompasses the fabrication of a wide range of products, including chimneys, barrels, oil tanks, funnels, ventilation ducts, and various shapes such as bends, circles, squares, and cones. This involves essential processes like shearing, bending, flanging, welding, and riveting, for which a sound understanding of geometry is vital in achieving precise metal prototyping results.

Sheet metal parts refer to sheet metal hardware parts, which can be processed by stamping, bending, stretching and other methods, and are defined as parts whose thickness remains unchanged during processing. They are relative to castings, forgings, and machined parts, etc.

II. Material selection for sheet metal processing

Sheet metal processing generally uses materials such as cold-rolled sheets (SPCC), hot-rolled sheets (SHCC), galvanized sheets (SECC, SGCC), copper (CU, brass, purple copper, beryllium copper), aluminum sheets (6061, 5052, 1010, 1060, 6063, hard aluminum, etc.), aluminum profiles, stainless steel (mirror, brushed, matte), and different materials are selected according to the product's functions and costs.

1. SPCC cold-rolled sheet is mainly used for electroplating and painting parts, with low cost, easy molding, and material thickness of ≤3.2mm.

2. SHCC hot-rolled sheet, with material thickness T≥3.0mm, is also used for electroplating and painting parts, with low cost, but difficult to form, mainly used for flat parts.

3. SECC, SGCC galvanized sheet. SECC electroplated sheet is divided into N material and P material. N material is mainly not treated on the surface, with high cost; P material is used for spray-painted parts.

4. Copper is mainly used as conductive material, its surface treatment is nickel plating, chromium plating, or no treatment, with high cost.

5. Aluminum sheet is generally treated with chromate (J11-A), oxidation (conductive oxidation, chemical oxidation), with high cost, and can be plated with silver or nickel.

6. Aluminum profile is a material with complex cross-sectional structure, which is widely used in various types of socket boxes. The surface treatment is the same as that of aluminum sheet.

7. Stainless steel is mainly used without any surface treatment, with high cost.
